Kansas State University students do not need to leave the heartland to work on the future of American energy. Republican Sen. Jerry Moran is putting $5 million behind that argument and directing it toward the university’s TRIGA Mark II Nuclear Reactor Facility in Manhattan.
Moran announced the federal investment after helping secure it through the FY2026 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill. The money will support improvements to K-State’s mechanical and nuclear engineering program and research reactor, strengthening a training ground for the engineers and scientists America needs.
“Investing in the cutting-edge research taking place at our Kansas universities is a priority of mine,” Moran said in his January announcement. He tied the investment to a straightforward goal: give more Kansans the opportunity to live and work at home while contributing to meaningful innovation and discovery.
That is what an energy policy looks like when it moves beyond slogans: it trains workers, upgrades equipment, and gives students access to a real research reactor. It tells employers that Kansas intends to produce the talent required for advanced nuclear work instead of importing every specialist from somewhere else.
K-State’s mechanical and nuclear engineering program spans traditional and emerging research fields, with graduate students participating directly in laboratory and research work. The university’s engineering program describes faculty research across both disciplines and graduate assistantships tied to funded projects.
The investment fits a larger Kansas energy push. K-State’s 2026 legislative update lists continuing support for nuclear engineering among the state’s major workforce and research priorities. Federal and state support are pointing in the same direction: build the expertise here.
Energy independence requires more than drilling permits and power plants. It requires engineers who understand reactor systems, materials, safety, licensing and the next generation of nuclear technology. China is not waiting to train its workforce. America cannot afford to wait either.
The usual Washington approach scatters money across fashionable promises and hopes innovation appears. Moran’s approach put a specific investment into an existing Kansas facility with students, faculty and a technical mission already in place.
The $5 million will not remake the entire energy sector by itself. It will strengthen the reactor facility where the next group of Kansas-trained nuclear professionals can learn, research and build.
Moran secured the money. K-State has the program. Kansas has the students. The Republican energy message is now backed by a laboratory: American power should be reliable, American expertise should be stronger and the people building it should have a reason to stay in the heartland.
